Oral Contraception

We are proud to offer the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, a pivotal addition to our community healthcare offerings. This service is designed to provide accessible, convenient, and professional advice and support for those seeking contraception in Liverpool. As a local community pharmacy, we aim to complement local government actions in supporting sexual health services and widening access to contraception, particularly in high-risk and vulnerable communities.

Key Features of Our Pharmacy Contraception Service

Ongoing Monitoring and Supply of Oral Contraception: Our pharmacists provide continuous support for individuals who are already using oral contraception. Regular consultations ensure that your contraceptive method remains suitable and effective for your needs.

Initiation of Oral Contraception: Our service includes the initiation of oral contraception. Individuals can now have a confidential consultation with our pharmacists to start using the contraceptive pill, bypassing the need to visit a GP or sexual health clinic.

Supplies via Patient Group Direction (PGD): Supplies of oral contraception are made under a Patient Group Direction, allowing pharmacists to dispense contraceptive pills directly.

Benefits of the Service

Greater Choice and Access: The service aims to offer more options for individuals considering starting or continuing their current form of oral contraception. This is particularly beneficial in providing wider access to healthcare in Liverpool, especially for high-risk communities and vulnerable patients.

Health Inequality Reduction: By making contraception more accessible, we help address health inequalities, ensuring that everyone in Liverpool has access to the contraceptive support they need.

Increased Capacity in Primary Care: Our service helps create additional capacity in primary care and sexual health clinics by managing ongoing contraceptive supplies, thus supporting the demand for more complex health assessments.

How the Service Works

Self-Referral or Professional Referral: Individuals can either self-refer or be referred by their GP, sexual health clinic, or equivalent services. Our pharmacists may also identify suitable individuals and offer the service to them.

Confidential Consultation: During a confidential consultation, our pharmacists will discuss your contraceptive needs and reach a shared decision on the best course of action. This ensures that the contraception provided is clinically appropriate for you.

No Prescription Charges: As this is an NHS service, the supply of oral contraception is exempt from any prescription charges, making it an affordable option for everyone.

GP Notification (With Consent): While you do not need to be registered with a GP to access this service, we will inform your GP practice about your use of the service, provided you give your consent.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Pharmacy Contraception Service, you must be an individual seeking to be initiated on an oral contraception (OC), or an individual seeking to obtain a further supply of their ongoing OC, including: Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC) – from menarche up to and including 49 years of age, or Progestogen Only Pill (POP) – from menarche up to and including 54 years of age.
